Lately, I have seen a lot of discussions where people compare Instagram and TikTok, fiercely battling over which is better. Which one wins the Gold Medal at the Social Media Olympics?

The truth is: those are two completely different social media platforms that are used by different people for different reasons.

Instagram is all about portraying your everyday life in pictures, and it can also be used by brands and influencers to promote their products and services. 

To me, Instagram feel a bit more personal, as you can choose what content you want to see.

TikTok, meanwhile, is all about trends. You can spend a whole day scrolling through this platform watching the same video made in different ways by different people over and over again.

The fun thing about TikTok is that it gives you the opportunity to create small videos that will make someone laugh or smile.

So which is better?

For me, it all comes down to personal preference and generational differences. If you have been looking close enough, Instagram has slowly been becoming an “older” platform, and the people who enjoy it are those who have an already constructed life and share it with the world.

TikTok is a “younger” platform where you can see teens doing all kinds of crazy trends like recreating dances, practicing pranks, and otherwise sharing their talents. I think this is a great platform for the new virtual generation, and it will give them the exposure (and video creation/editing experience) that they need.

Something we can learn about the rise of TikTok is that videos are becoming more popular every day. People like to consume quick content, something that they view for one minute and then move on. 

Instagram has certainly noticed this trend as well. They’ve implemented their own video feature, Stories. Nowadays, people enjoy watching Instagram Stories moreso than scrolling through their feed.
